Who we are

Hey, We are
 Stephen and Emily!

At the Centre of Movement, our mission is to revolutionise children’s lives by unlocking their potential through the power of movement.
We firmly believe that movement is the key to optimal brain development, providing the essential information and conditions needed for children to thrive.

Together, Emily and Stephen developed the course Physical Therapy at Home to provide families with therapeutic interventions they can implement at home. Understanding that not all families can travel to their clinic, the course empowers parents to support their children’s progress and help them reach their full potential.

More about Emily

Emily, an Occupational Therapist since 2005, has dedicated her career to supporting children with disabilities After completing her Feldenkrais training, she worked in a stroke rehabilitation unit in New Zealand, where she witnessed remarkable progress in adult patients. Struck by the lack of similar support for babies and children following brain injury or stroke, she became determined to address this gap. Returning to Australia, she co-founded the Centre of Movement with her husband, Stephen, on the Gold Coast.

More about Stephen

Stephen, a Clinical Exercise Physiologist with over a decade of experience, has a passion for innovative therapeutic approaches. As a director at the Centre of Movement, he combines advanced therapeutic techniques such as the TheraSuit Method, Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI), Functional Gait training and the Trexo Robotic Walker to help children achieve movement milestones once thought unreachable. His passion for empowering children drives the Centre’s mission.

Centre of Movement has been instrumental in progressing my sons development. After being told by doctors he would not walk, we were recommended COM by a friend and jumped at it. The team soon got my son to sit independently, and he is about to walk independently!

FAQ’s

What is the focus of this course?

This course is designed to give you practical handling and physical therapy techniques that you can use at home to help your child gain better physical control and access to movements. Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and skills to support your child’s physical development and independence. It is designed for children that are not yet standing and walking independently. It starts at the beginning movements of head control and goes through each milestone to stepping.

How do I know if these techniques are safe for my child?

Your child’s safety is our top priority. We recommend obtaining clearance from your doctor before starting the program to ensure it aligns with your child’s health needs. In addition, our course includes an initial Zoom consultation, where you can raise any specific questions or concerns with us directly. The techniques are designed to be safe and effective, and they are delivered by trained professionals with extensive experience in supporting children with disabilities. Ongoing support is also available to help you feel confident every step of the way.

Can I still use these techniques if my child is already receiving therapy from a professional?

Yes, absolutely! Our program is designed to complement any existing therapy your child may be receiving. We believe in a collaborative, child-centered approach, where all therapies work together to support your child’s unique goals and needs. You’ll be able to share your child’s current goals with us during the initial consultation, allowing us to tailor the program to fit seamlessly alongside their ongoing therapy.

Do I need any special equipment to practice these techniques at home?

You don’t need anything fancy to get started! Most of the techniques will be physical handling techniques that you will do together with your child. We have a high table that you will see in the videos though you could be working on the floor or your dining room table with a foam yoga mat on top. If you do want to add some basic equipment like cushions or therapy balls, these are affordable and easily accessible tools that can help enhance your child’s therapy.

How much time should I dedicate each day to practicing these techniques?

We know your days are busy, so we recommend starting with just 10-30 minutes per day. This gives you the flexibility to integrate therapy into your routine without overwhelming you and your child in the beginning. As they become more comfortable, you can gradually increase the time to fit their needs. You’ll discover that these techniques can turn into a truly enjoyable and meaningful bonding experience with your child as you watch them gain more control over their body and movements.

Will these techniques work for my child’s age and abilities?

This program is designed for children that are not yet walking independently. The course covers essential milestones, including head control, rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, and culminates with stepping as the final module. We’re also planning to release additional courses focused on more advanced motor skills like running, jumping, and refining your child’s agility and coordination.
